Press Release: ICCT takes responsibility of the leading academic journal Perspectives on Terrorism

On March 31st, 2023, The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) is pleased to announce that it has taken responsibility for editing and publishing the leading academic journal Perspectives on Terrorism (PT), in partnership with two renowned academic institutions: the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University, and the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St Andrews. PT is a quarterly, peer-reviewed, and open-access academic journal. It has been ranked by Google Scholar as #3 in Terrorism Studies and listed in the Top-10 “free open access journals in social sciences” by Jouroscope™.

ICCT Director Thomas Renard noted, “With Perspectives on Terrorism, ICCT is further strengthening its position as a leading knowledge hub on the study of terrorism and extremism. We are publishing cutting-edge research and making it available for everyone, as well as connecting major European scholars and research institutions.”

Prof. James Forest, ICCT Distinguished Fellow and Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, will now take over as Editor-in-Chief from Prof. em. Alex P. Schmid, a leading figure in the field of terrorism studies and founding member of PT. The PT Co-editors are Dr. Joana Cook, ICCT Senior Fellow; Prof. em. Alex P. Schmid, ICCT Distinguished Fellow; Dr. Tim Wilson, Director of CSTPV; and Dr. Graig Klein ISGA Assistant Professor. PT was founded in 2007 by members of the Terrorism Research Initiative (TRI), Prof. em. Alex Schmid, Prof. James Forest, and Robert Wesley.

On his ambition for the journal, James Forest noted, “Now beginning its 17th year in publication, Perspectives on Terrorism is poised to explore new and exciting topics within the study of terrorism and counter-terrorism, and I look forward to many years of a successful partnership with ICCT, CSTPV and ISGA."

The first issue of 2023 will be released on the 31st of March. It includes ten articles, covering a broad range of issues related to terrorism and extremism, as well as a special section on “anti-government extremism”. Together with this new issue, ICCT will host a new website for PT, as a subdomain of ICCT’s website. Perspectives on Terrorism also receives a new look, with a new design and a new logo.
